Description

Studio portrait of 291Private (Pte) Walter Newton, 18th Battalion, of Orange, NSW. A labourer before enlisting in February 1915, Pte Newton left Australia for Egypt in June 1915 and arrived on Gallipoli in August 1915. He spent less than two weeks on the Gallipoli peninsula before he was wounded and evacuated to Malta with diarrhoea. He rejoined the 18th Battalion in Egypt in January 1916, and proceeded to France for service on the Western Front in March 1916, where he advanced to the rank of Sergeant (Sgt) by November 1916. Sgt Newton was killed whilst on a working party at Delville Wood, near Longueval on 28 December 1916, aged 25.
