Studio portrait of 699 Private (Pte) Gordon Frazer, 1st Battalion, of Haberfield, NSW, (seated) with an unidentified soldier (left). A migrant from Newcastle on Tyne, England, and working as a fitter's labourer before enlisting in August 1914, Pte Frazer left Australia for Egypt in October 1914. Having taken part in the Gallipoli landings on 25 April 1915, Pte Frazer was evacuated with problems with his eyesight and spent time in hospital on Malta. Rejoining the battalion in Egypt in February 1916, Pte Frazer was sent to France for service on the Western Front in July. He was only with his battalion for fifteen days before he was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 18 August 1916, aged 28. He was buried nearby, but the location of his grave was lost in later fighting, and consequently he has no known grave.
