Studio portrait of 6085 Private (Pte) Hubert Henry Smith, 1st Battalion, of Klondyke, NSW. A farmer before enlisting in March 1916, Pte Smith left Australia for England with the 19th Reinforcements in August 1916. Pte Smith was killed during the Second Battle of Bullecourt on 5 May 1917, when he was shot in the head by a machine-gun bullet during a German attack on the Australian positions, aged 19. He was buried nearby, but the location of his grave was lost, and subsequently has no known grave.
