Studio portrait of 1345 Private (Pte) Edgar George Abbey. A clerk from Warrnambool, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Abbey embarked with D Company, 38th Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Runic on 20 Jun 1916. Whilst in transit he was promoted to Sergeant but later reverted to the rank of Corporal at his own request. Later promoted to Lieutenant he was one of five men inside a command bunker at Messines on 17 July 1917 when a German shell burst through the roof and killed all the occupants instantly. Their remains were recovered and interred in the Kandahar Farm Cemetery, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.
