Studio portrait of 642 Sergeant (Sgt) Boyd Alexander Ellem, 41st Battalion, of Casino, NSW. A dairy farmer before enlisting on 6 March 1916, Sgt Ellem embarked from Sydney with C Company on HMAT Demosthenes on 18 May 1916. He was killed in action at Bony, France on 29 September 1918, at the age of 23. He was one of six brothers who enlisted; another brother, David Harold Ellem, was killed at Gallipoli on 1 May 1915.
