Studio portrait of 1189 Private (Pte) Norman Charles 'Edge' Edgley, 17th Battalion, of Melbourne, Victoria. A shoemaker before enlisting in February 1915, Pte Edgley left Australia for Egypt in May 1915 and spent a month on Gallipoli. He was transferred to the 55th Battalion in April 1916 as part of the 'doubling-up' of the AIF, and after another transfer to the 53rd Battalion in May, embarked for France for service on the Western Front in June. Having recovered from wounds sustained during the battle of Polygon Wood in September 1917, Pte Edgely was seriously wounded by fragments of a German shell which landed nearby whilst standing outside the entrance of a dugout in the reserve lines at Morlancourt on 4 July 1918. He died of his wounds at the 47th Casualty Clearing Station at Crouy-Sur-Somme on 7 July 1918, aged 25.
