Description
Informal portrait of 3088 Private (Pte) John William Lancaster, 6th Battalion (later 60th Battalion), of West Brunswick, Vic. Pte Lancaster, a linotype attendant prior to enlisting on 21 July 1915, embarked from Melbourne on RMS Osterley on 29 September 1915 with the 10th Reinforcements. He was transferred to 60th Battalion on 15 March 1916. He was killed in action on 19 July 1916, at the age of 28, during the first attack at Fromelles, and has no known grave. His son Bill Lancaster, two years old at the time of his father's death, later became Director of the Australian War Memorial.
