Studio portrait of 3065 Private (Pte) James Ernest (Ernie) Clifton, 27th Battalion, of Inglewood, SA. He worked as a labourer on his father's orchard prior to enlisting on 6 August 1915. Pte Clifton embarked from Adelaide on HMAT Medic with the 7th Reinforcements, 27th Battalion, on 12 January 1916. He was wounded in France on 5 August 1916, and died of his wounds on 9 August 1916.
