Description

Studio portrait of 3011 (later 3011A) Sergeant George Hamilton Barr, of Kilmore East, Vic. He enlisted at Benalla on 21 August 1914. He was given the service number 361 and allocated to C Company, 7th Battalion. He embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Hororata on 19 October 1914. However, on 12 November 1914, he was discharged as medically unfit, having contracted pneumonia. He re-enlisted on 6 July 1915, and embarked on HMAT Wiltshire as an Acting Corporal with the 7th Reinforcements, 21st Battalion, on 15 October 1915. He was transferred to the 60th Battalion on 26 February 1916, being allocated the revised service number 3011A, and reverting to the ranks, before being promoted to Corporal on 25 March 1916. On 31 May 1916, he reverted from the rank of Corporal back to Private at his own request. On 19 July 1917, he was killed in action near Fleurbaix, France, at the age of 22. He wears the stripes of a Sergeant on his sleeve, although his Service Record does not record him holding this rank. It is likely that he held this rank on a temporary basis at some point prior to his second embarkation.
