Description

Studio portrait of Private (Pte) John Alfred Shadwick, 48th Battalion, of Claremont, WA. A British born migrant and employed as an accountant before enlisting in October 1915, Pte Shadwick was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and left Australia with the 2nd Reinforcement group in August 1916. Lieutenant (Lt) Shadwick was in command of C Company, 48th Battalion, during its attack on the Hindenburg Line at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917. Wounded in the face during the initial advance, Lt Shadwick refused to retire to seek medical treatment, but was killed instantly by a German shell later during the day. According to those under his command, Lt Shadwick was "very cool and courageous" and "was the sort of man that if a shell behind him he wouldn't look behind". Aged 25 at the time of his death, his remains were never recovered.
