Studio portrait of 108 Private (Pte) Frank James, 58th Battalion, of South Yarra, Vic. A British immigrant and working as a saddler before enlisting in March 1915, Pte James left Australia with the original 24th Battalion in May 1915 for service in the Middle East. After serving on Gallipoli, Pte James was transferred to the 58th Battalion in France in March 1916. He was moving down an Australian communication trench at Fleurbaix during the Battle of Fromelles on 19 July 1916 when he was killed by the concussion of a German shell which exploded nearby, age 19.
