Studio portrait of 171 Private (Pte) Phillip George Pittaway, 27th Battalion, of Balaclava, SA. A labourer before enlisting in January 1915, Pte Pittaway left Australia for Egypt on board HMAT Geelong (A2) in May and spent three months on Gallipoli before being sent to France in March 1916 where he took part in the fighting at Pozieres. Pte Pittaway was killed during the 27th Battalion's attack on German positions Flers on 5 November 1916 and has no known grave.
