Description
Studio portrait of 5873 (later 5837A) Private (Pte) Frederick Young Egan, 27th Battalion, of Perth, WA. A station hand in civilian life, he road with his father the 180 miles from a station on the Lyndon River to the nearest enlisting office at Carnarvon, so he could enlist on 8 June 1916, his 18th birthday. Pte Egan embarked from Fremantle with the 16th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Port Melbourne on 30 October 1916. Later transferring to the 28th Battalion, he was killed in action at Buire, France on 15 April 1918, aged 20.
