Studio portrait of 5440 Corporal (Cpl) James Mason, 6th Battalion, of Cochrane's Creek, Vic. An engine driver prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 17th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripides (A14) on 4 April 1916. Later transferring to the 4th Pioneer Battalion, Cpl Mason was killed in action in France on 3 August 1916. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, France.
