Description

Collection relating to the Vietnam War service of national serviceman 2789995 Sapper Raymond Vander Heiden. Sapper Vander Heiden served with 1st Field Squadron and 17th Construction Squadron in the Nui Dat area of Vietnam from December 1968 to October 1969. Ray Vander Heiden was called up for National Service in 1967 but granted a deferment for one year to complete his apprenticeship. In April of 1968 he was recruited into the 12th National Service intake and commenced Basic Recruit Training at Kapooka, followed by Corps training at the school of Military engineering (SME) at Casula in NSW. Thereafter was the jungle Training at Canungra in southern Queensland prior to departure for Vietnam. He left Australia for Vietnam on 2 December 1968; and left Vietnam for return to Australia on 29 October 1969.

Custom box - contains Sapper Vander Heiden's original handwritten diary which gives an in depth and descriptive account of his experience, including time spent on patrol during different operations, such as Operation Goodwood, Operation Raenella, and Operation Federal. The diary is interspersed with newspaper clippings, photographs and ephemera.

Wallet 1 of 1 - contains supplementary material including: two information pamphlets on National Service and Vander Heiden's completed registration form; several documents from the Department of Labour and Industry regarding his trainee apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery, his call-up, acceptance and training for national service; eventual discharge from the Army; and a pamphlet on re-establishment benefits. Also included is a luggage tag, his paybook, and Certificate of Discharge.
