Studio portrait of 363 Lance Sergeant (L/Sgt) John Francis Davey, B Company, 21st Battalion, of Northcote, Vic. A labourer prior to enlistment he embarked from Melbourne with the rank of Private on 10 May 1915 on HMAT Ulysses (A38). He transferred to the 57th Battalion on 4 April 1916 and was promoted to Lance Sergeant (L/Sgt). He was killed in action on 26 April 1918, aged 22 years. L/Sgt Davey has no know grave and his name is recorded on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France. L/Sgt is wearing a Lewis Gunner's qualification badge above his Sergeant's stripes.
