Description

Olive green canvas two-part pack for a stores parachute. The bottom half of the pack has a solid square base with a pair of white cotton tapes attached to each corner. The markings 'PART NO. 4264815' are stencilled in black ink on the 100 mm canvas sides, which also have brass eyelets located approximately every 45 mm around their edge. A series of white cotton loops sewn to the inside of the base would have retained the parachute cords. The top half of the pack is of the same shape as the base, but is not rigid. There are brass eyelets located around the edge, matching those on the base, and thick white cotton webbing reinforcement strips are sewn vertically and horizontally across the inner surface.

History / Summary

The tropical conditions in Papua New Guinea caused mould and fungi to have a large impact on equipment, food and clothing stores. Due to these conditions replacements were needed on a regular basis. The easiest access to the troops was through parachute pack stores. This method provided troops with the material they needed, and were able to over come the jungle environment.
