Remains of a shovel : Lone Pine, Gallipoli
Description
Remains of a general purpose flat point plain back strap pattern spade. The front strap is impressed with 'NASH & SONS / 1915' and the number '3' at an angle to the other text, but in larger script. Sandwiched between two shaped metal straps is the remains of the wooden handle. Four bullet or shrapnel holes have punctured the blade and there are several dents where the shovel was also hit.
History / Summary
The remains of this spade were found on 8 January 1919 by Lieutenant William Hopkin James at Lone Pine. James was working on Gallipoli leading a small party from the Australian War Records Section, taking photographs and collecting items for the national collection.
