Carved chalk souvenir Pozieres
Description
Small piece of carved chalk. The shape is whale like, with a two centimeter diameter hole through the rounded half.
History / Summary
Piece of carved chalk made from material taken from the chalk pit at Pozieres in October 1918. During fight to take Pozieres in July 1916 the chalk pit, a quarry located on Chalk Pit Road (also known as Dead Man's Road) between Pozieres and Contalmaison, housed in its slight depression, medical aid posts, field cookers, trench mortars and an ammunition dump. The dump was later set on fire by German shells.
