Description

Studio portrait of 4862 Private (Pte) Ernest Plater, 2nd Battalion. A native of London, England, Pte Plater was a farm labourer from Balmain, NSW when he embarked along with his brother 4863 Pte Walter Plater with the 15th Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Star of England on 8 March 1916. After transferring to the 54th Battalion he was initially reported as missing in action, and it was later determined that he had been killed in action on 20 July 1916. He is commemorated on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, France. Pte Walter Plater returned to Australia on 2 June 1919.
