Set of 52 playing cards (lacking the joker which may never have been included) issued by the British aviation magazine "The Aeroplane" during the Second World War. Each suit contains a view of 13 German or British aircraft in a certain elevation: hearts are top elevation; diamonds, bottom elevation; spades, side elevation and clubs, front elevation. The aircraft and their accompanying number are: Dornier Do 215 (2); Junkers Ju 88 A-1 (3); Heinkel He 111K Mk VA (4); Handley Page Hampden (5); Armstrong Whitworth Whitley IV (6) Vickers-Armstrong Wellington 1A (7); Bristol Blenheim IVF (8); Heinkel He 113 (9); Messerschmitt Me 109E (10); Messerschmitt Me 110 (Jack); Hawker Hurricane Mk 1 (Queen); Supermarine Spitfire Mk 1 (King); Boulton Paul Defiant (Ace). Each card is marked '"The Aeroplane" Copyright' and includes a brief summary of the aircraft's most recognisable features, and this information is repeated in each suit. The reverse features a standard geometrical pattern in red.
The donor stated that this pack was used by pilots on "standby" during the Battle of Britain.
