Studio portrait of 4028 Private (Pte) John William Gardiner, 3rd Battalion, of Penrith, NSW. A sawyer prior to enlisting on 26 September 1915, Pte Gardiner embarked from Sydney, NSW, aboard HMAT Medic on 30 December 1915. He died of wounds in France on 22 August 1916, aged 22. His brother 2531 Pte Albert George Gardiner also died of wounds in France on 10 April 1917.
