Army biscuit: George Carpenter, 3rd Pioneers
Description
Army Hard tack biscuit, on which is written 'G Carpenter 397 3rd Pioneers'. A small fragment of the biscuit is missing from the lower edge. The biscuit is stamped with the maker's mark Swallow and Ariell, and is pricked with 25 holes.
History / Summary
This biscuit was annotated by George Carpenter, No 397, who embarked at Melbourne on HMAT Wandilla on 6 June 1916. While in France, on 31 October 1917, he was accidentally injured, suffering a gunshot wound which fractured his lower left leg. He returned to Australia on 16 December 1917 and was discharged the following year.
