Description
The bodies of some of the approximately 50 members of the 11th Battalion killed during the Leane’s Trench fight on 6 August 1915 lay in a row. Leane's Trench was established on Holly Ridge and was captured from the Turks by the 11th Battalion on 31 July 1915. It was named after Captain Lionel Raymond Leane who commanded the assault. The succcessful capture of the trench cleared the Turks from a position from which they could have impaired the attack on Lone Pine. On 5 August 1915 Turkish troops unsuccessfully attempted to recapture Leane's Trench resulting in heavy casualties on both sides.
