History / Summary

Example of the style of souvenir china and pottery featuring the newly constructed Australian War Memorial and sold in the Canberra district in the 1950s from such outlets as the Memorial Kiosk, JB Youngs Department Store and selected jewellers and newsagents. This teacup and its related tennis saucer (designed to hold the teacup and a sandwich) were part of a standard range of souvenir china patterns designed to accept a whole range of decorative transfers depicting tourist sites and destinations. Millions were produced. Manufacturers Roslyn China, based at Park Place Works, Longton, Staffordshire were formerly Reid & Co, who used the trademark Roslyn and operated from the same site from 1913. Roslyn China was produced from 1946 until July 1963; the distinctive trade mark featured on the base was used from 1950 until 1955.
