Informal portrait of 1105 Corporal (Cpl) Wilfred Dudley Lovegrove, 7th Australian Light Horse Regiment, mounted on a white donkey. The donkey is saddled but is not haltered or bridled; the rider guides his mount by a single piece of rope attached to the leather collar around its neck. Prior to his enlistment on 15 March 1915, Cpl Lovegrove, was a forest guard of Fullerton, NSW. He sailed from Sydney with the 7th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Chilka on 7 June 1915. He was killed in action on 6 November 1917, aged 26, and is buried at Beersheba War Cemetery.
