Studio portrait of 1917 Private (Pte) Douglas Wade Dark, 3rd Reinforcements, 17th Battalion, of Dungog, NSW. A grazier prior to enlistment on 22 June 1915, Dark embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Runic on 9 August 1915. He died of wounds on 20 June 1916 in France, aged 23 years. His brother, Lieutenant Eric Wyndham Dark MC, 17th Battalion, also served with the AIF; he returned to Australia on 13 April 1919.
