Description

Studio portrait of 3660 Private (Pte) Charles William Woodland, 59th Battalion of Orbost, Vic. Pte Charles Woodland embarked with the 8th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Afric on 5 January 1916. He died of wounds aged 23 on 21 July 1916 and is buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension. His brother 4341 Pte Louis John Woodland, 5th Battalion died of wounds aged 26 on 15 October 1918 and is buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France (see P04909.013). A third brother, 2514 Pte Arthur Woodland, 57th Battalion, returned to Australia on 21 March 1919 aged 24. All three brothers worked as carpenters prior to enlistment.
