History / Summary

This religious medallion was collected from the body of an Australian soldier during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915 by a Turkish soldier. This man's son later passed it to an Australian who was working in Turkey. The image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus comes from the visions of Saint Margaret in the 17th century. The Sacred Heart of Mary originates from New Testament, in the Gospel according to Luke '...Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: "This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too...".'.
