History / Summary

This type of engine powered the Yokosuka D4Y Suisei "Judy" dive bomber/reconnaissance aircraft and is similar to the Kawasaki HA-40 which powered the K1-61 Hien "Tony" fighter. Both types were license built versions of the German Daimler Benz DB-600 series which powered the Messerschmitt Bf109, the Atsuta being a copy of the DB - 601A which powered the Bf 109E. (See AWM file 749/1/32 Part II for more details). The 1,100hp DB 601A engine was based on the earlier DB 600, but was fitted with direct fuel injection, in place of a carburettor, and improved superchargers. The fuel injection system proved to be a great asset in combat, as the engine did not cut out under conditions of negative gravity.
