Description

German Air Service altimeter. The device is housed within a sorfwood box. A small rectangular window in the side of the box allows the user to view a rotating spool, on which measurements are recorded. The mechanism is able to be serviced by removing it from one open end., using a metal 'D' shaped handle attached to a flat metal plate. The plate has engraved upon it the maker's name, C.P.Goerz, Berlin, and the serial number Nr2956 DRGB. Mounted on each of the upper and underside corners of the box is an eyelet. Fastened to one of the eyelets is a 25mm long thin gauge coil spring. It is presumed that similar springs were originally attached to each eyelet.

History / Summary

This device was originally fitted using the 8 eyelets, and was cushioned from shock by eight springs attached to those eyelets. Its exact provenence is unknown.
