Description

Local children gather around an Australian Army Land Rover bearing a Peace Monitoring Group (PMG) flag, during a routine patrol to a village near Kieta, on the east coast of Bougainville. On 1 May 1998 the Australian-led PMG succeeded the Truce Monitoring Group (TMG), which was formed after the Burnham Declaration of July 1997 at peace talks in New Zealand. After a long period of civil war in Bougainville between separatist groups and the Papua New Guinea government, both peacekeeping groups performed the role of monitoring the ceasefire, and facilitating the peace process.
