Patrick Trost as the captain Second-in-Command 28th Commonwealth Independent Infantry Brigade Group Signal Squadron, Malaya 1955-1957, interviewed by Brad Manera
Trost speaks, as an overview, of his family background and military career up to and including the Malayan Emergency; his selection of signals as his military career and training; experience of British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) duties in Japan; duty in a British Army signals regiment in West Germany; posting to Army Headquarters in Melbourne, during which he raised the 37-man Australian component for the 28th British Commonwealth Brigade Signals Squadron to serve in Malaya at Butterworth as part of the British Commonwealth Far East Strategic Reserve (BCFESR); characters of the Brigade Signals Squadron; relations between the Australian and British soldiers on duty, at sport and socially; weapons, signals equipment and vehicles used in Malaya; daily routine in the Squadron; rest and recreational facilities at Butterworth and married quarters on Penang Island; tasks performed by Squadron detachments and personnel; nature of the Emergency and the communist terrorists from the signals point of view; the lack of morale problems with Squadron soldiers; health problems during Malayan service; his farewell parade and return to Australia.
