Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives

Studio portrait of 3864 Private (Pte) Roy Lander, 22nd Battalion from South Northcote, Victoria. A 22 year old French polisher prior to enlisting on 12 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 9th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 8 February 1916 aboard HMAT Warilda (A69). After a brief stop in Egypt, he arrived in France and joined the 22nd Battalion on 31 July 1916. In December he was taken ill and did not rejoin the battalion until 1 March 1917. Pte Lander was killed in action in France on 12 March 1917 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
