Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of 3577 Private (Pte) Martin William Larkin. A labourer from Geelong, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Larkin embarked along with his brother 3576 Pte Rody Richard Larkin with the 8th Reinforcements, 22nd Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Afric on 5 January 1916. He later received a shrapnel wound to the shoulder and was admitted to hospital. Following his recovery he re-joined his battalion and was wounded in the head. On 20 October 1917 he succumbed to his wounds and was buried in the St Sever Cemetery Extension, France. His brother 1607 Pte Patrick Joseph Larkin was also killed in action and a second brother, 3576 Corporal Rody Richard Larkin also served in the AIF. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
