Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of 4885 Private (Pte) William Duncan McLennan, 5th Battalion from Mooroopna, Victoria. A 39 year old managing director prior to enlistment on 9 November 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 15th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 7 March 1916 aboard HMAT Wiltshire. He was an Acting Corporal for the voyage overseas but reverted to the rank of Private on joining the 5th Battalion in France. Pte McLennan was killed in action on 25 July 1916 at Pozieres, France and is commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, France. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
