Description

Coarse weave khaki green breeches woven with fine cotton warps and slubbed wool wefts in a 2/2 twill. Welt pockets at each side seam lined with unbleached plain weave cotton. Centre back seam opens to a wide vented waistband. An adjustment strap of the same khaki green wool and cotton fabric has been stitched on either side of the vent with the two ends tied in a knot. White celluloid button at the front waist; the two buttons at the concealed fly opening missing. Leg openings at narrow knee part of breeches each have two buttoned fastening; at the left leg only one white plastic button remains; at the right leg, the top button is white plastic and the lower button is a pressed metal, possibly zinc with 'HEERESAUSRUSTING' in raised letters on the obverse. The inner knee of each leg is strapped with an irregular patch of khaki green fabric. Waistband is lined with undyed plain weave cotton. On the inner left front are some faint blue markings, possibly in Turkish script. Part of concealed fly and leg openings lined with same cotton fabric.

History / Summary

This uniform was collected during operations in Palestine, possibly from a Turkish prisoner of war, and brought back by the Australian War Records Section around 1919. it was acquired to represent the typically poor quality of uniforms issued to the ordinary Ottoman soldier.
