Outdoor portrait of 408168 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Kenneth Munro (later DFC and Bar) RAAF. An accountant from Burnie, Tasmania, Flt Lt Munro enlisted with the RAAF on 31 January, 1941, and subsequently received his pilot’s wings and commission in September of the same year. In November 1941, he travelled to the United Kingdom where he attended an advanced flying training course at the RAF College, Cranwell. On 22 September 1942, he was posted to No 10 Squadron RAF at Melbourne, Yorkshire, flying Halifax bombers. On 15 December 1942, Flt Lt Munro received the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for ‘displaying exceptional operational courage whilst flying’. He later received a bar to the DFC on 11 June, 1943. Flt Lt Munro died in a flying accident on 1 July 1943 in Bishopswood, near Gloucestershire, UK, while serving with No 3 Flying Instructors School, RAF. He is buried in the Bath (Haycombe) Cemetery in England.
