Group portrait of Sergeant (Sgt) Percy Wilson of Ballarat, Vic, (left) 4133 Corporal (Cpl) Raymond Robert (Ray) Hemphill, of Lancefield, Vic (centre) and 4218 Corporal (Cpl) Francis Thomas (Frank) Sterling, of Camberwell, Vic (right) at Lark Hill Camp, Salisbury Plains. Sgt Wilson is possibly 2812 Percy James Wilson, of Hawthorn, Vic, who enlisted on 18 June 1915 and embarked aboard HMAT Ulysses on 27 October 1915. He was promoted to lance corporal on 20 October 1916 in France and sergeant in France on 16 October 1917. He returned to Australia on 13 July 1919 as a sergeant with the 8th Battalion and was discharged on 4 November 1919. Cpl Hemphill, a medical student prior to enlisting on 17 December 1915, embarked with 21st Battalion aboard HMAT Wiltshire on 7 March 1916. He was promoted on several occasions but reverted to rank. He died of wounds in France on 30 December 1916 aged 23 years. Cpl Sterling enlisted on 5 October 1915 and embarked with the 21st Battalion aboard HMAT Wiltshire on 7 March 1916. After being gassed in France he returned to Australia on 6 June 1918.
