Description
Studio portrait of 5680 Private (Pte) Samuel Downey, 18th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion, of Wellington, NSW, aged 24 years. Pte Downey enlisted on 12 April 1916 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Kyarra on 3 June 1916. He was wounded in early October 1916 and admitted to No 3 Canadian General Hospital. After some months in action on the Western Front in France, Downey's unit was engaged in fighting at the Second Battle of Bullecourt in which he was killed in action on 5 May 1917. He is buried in the Military Cemetery at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
