Barbara “Babs” Adams
Barbara “Babs” Adams, was born in 1951 or 1952, to a woman named Beryl (mother’s maiden name and father’s name unknown).
Barbara lived in the Sydney suburb of Hurlstone Park in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She attended Fort Street High School from approximately 1965–70. She was Captain of Gloucester House at the school in 1970, and had participated in the Outward Bound School at Fisherman’s Point on the Hawksbury River, New South Wales in 1968.
She married 2792886 Corporal Graeme Richard Hellwig (1947–2014) in April 1972.
The Australian War Memorial holds a collection of handwritten letters and cards written by Barbara Adams to Graeme Hellwig, which cover the period June 1968 to January 1972. The collection was donated by the National Vietnam Veteran’s Museum.

Graeme Richard Hellwig, 25 January 1947–6 June 2014
Graeme Richard Hellwig was born on 25 January 1947 in the Sydney suburb of Randwick.
During the Vietnam War, he served as 2792886 Corporal Graeme Richard Hellwig with the Royal Corps of Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers of the Australian Army (RAEME). He was conscripted under the National Service Scheme and commenced training in Singleton, New South Wales in 1969, followed by training stints in Bandiana, Victoria; Holsworthy, New South Wales; Rockhampton, Queensland; Woodside, South Australia; Puckapunyal, Victoria; and Canungra, Queensland. He served in Vietnam in the 102 Field Workshop in 1971–72, during which time he also taught English to Vietnamese students through the Vietnamese-Allied Cultural Association (VACC).
Graeme attended Hurstville Boys High School from 1958–63 and lived in the Sydney suburb of Hurstville as a young adult. He purchased a property in North Springwood, New South Wales in 1971. In early 1972 he lived in Grays Point, New South Wales, and at the time of his death in 2014 his residential address was in South Windsor, New South Wales.
He married Barbara Adams (born 1951 or 1952), also known as “Babs”, in April 1972.
Graeme Hellwig died on 6 June 2014 in Sydney, New South Wales.
The Australian War Memorial holds one letter and a poem written by Graeme Hellwig. The collection was donated by the National Vietnam Veteran’s Museum.

Doctor Paul Garner Large, 12 August 1920–24 October 2008
Paul Garner Large was born on 12 August 1920 in Beira, Mozambique.
He was raised in Durban, South Africa, and later moved to London to study at Guy’s Hospital Medical School from 1938 to 1943. He returned to Durban in 1953 and migrated to Melbourne in 1958.
During the Vietnam War he served as the leader of an Australian Medical Team stationed at Bien Hoa Hospital in South Vietnam. He completed three stints in Vietnam over six years: October to December 1966, August to October 1969, and October to December 1972.
Paul married Susan Gostwyck May, then known as Susan Gostwyck Large (1929–2014). Their marriage produced five children: Peter Francis Large, Susanna Jane Large, Richard Vincent Large, Catherine Large and Jonathan Paul Large.
Paul Garner Large died on 24 October 2008 in Melbourne.
The Australian War Memorial holds one diary, numerous letters, and a summary of the medical aid programmes in Vietnam written by Paul Garner Large, which cover the period 1966–75.

Sue McDonald
Sue McDonald was born on 13 December in the early 1950s (c. 1951–53).
She lived in the Sydney suburb of Hurlstone Park in the late 1960s to early 1970s, and may have attended Fort Street High School in the late 1960s to early 1970s.
The Australian War Memorial holds a collection of handwritten letters written by Sue McDonald to National Serviceman 2792886 Corporal Graeme Richard Hellwig, and one to 29343 Corporal Philip James Ferguson, which cover the period 1970–72. The collection was donated by the National Vietnam Veteran’s Museum.
